Members Attend 2006 MCD Fall District Meeting
Mid-Central District held it's fall meeting in New Melle, Mo. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006 at the New Melle Lakes Golf Course. Boone Country Garden Club hosted this year's meeting and did a fabulous job! The theme of the Annual Fall Meeting was "Autumn Jewels". The guest speaker was Claudia Chopp, NGC Flower Show School Instructor & Accredited Master Judge, provided a design program titled, "Designs with a Holiday Flair". 98 garden club members were in attendance from the 10 clubs in our district. A silent auction raised money for the district treasury and booths were set up to sell bulb baskets and a designer handbag booth provided by Korki Kuhn was used as a raffle to raise funds to offset the expenses the host club incurred. Food donations were collected for St. Vincent DePaul for the needy. First Capitol Garden Club sent 3 members to the meeting.
MCD Director awarded Boone Country Garden Club a check for $25.00 for having the most members from their club (32) at the meeting.
The menu included tossed salad, pork loin with cranberry chutney, scalloped potatoes, seasoned green beans, sweet rolls and butter and of course a desert table that surpassed everyone's taste buds. Homemade pies and the cooking of all the food was provided by this gracious club.
FGCM officers in attendance were Mary Ann Meador, President, Maisie Keeser, 1st Vice President and Jean Roseman, 2nd Vice President. Sweatshirts were sold to benefit FGCM.
Awards for Club Yearbooks and Books of Evidence from the FGCM convention this summer were also given out. It was a beautiful day filled with friendship!

First Capitol Garden Club Plants Flowering Tree
Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri has granted five Mid-Central District garden clubs with $ 200.00 each to be used toward the purchase and planting of a flowering tree to support the NGC, In. national project, "America A-Bloom".
First Capitol Garden Club planted a Prairie Fire Crabapple at First United Methodist Church in St. Charles, Mo. on April 19, 2005 in honor of Shirley G. Knight, a club member and Flower Show Judge who passed away this year.
The following was written in Shirley Knight’s honor at the dedication:
As the roots of this tree provide nutrition and life to this tree, so too was Shirley, a stable rooted member of our club who nurtured us along through many a project. She offered lively, viable ideas and was there to support us through any genre of gardening.
As the trunk of this tree holds its branches, Shirley helped maintain our club with her creativity, knowledge and confidence. Her resilience enabled her to sway with the ever-changing climates of garden clubbing.
As the branches of this tree reach out to hold the flowers and then the leaves to come, Shirley gave her eager arms to all projects within her reach. She was always ready to give and receive a hug for a concerted effort or job well done.
As the flowers of this tree create visual beauty for all to enjoy and nectar for the bees to thrive, Shirley offered beauty by way of her flower designs and innovative ideas. Her encouragement fed our club and because of Shirley, our club thrived and strived to be better gardeners, designers and friends.
As the leaves of this tree offer shade and allow us to linger on a hot sunny day, Shirley will always be over us in our minds and in our hearts as a true inspiration. We are so blessed to have known her and been allowed to share in her beauty.
When fall arrives and this tree resides in rest, so too will we welcome the chance to rest and dwell upon our dear friend Shirley. Her positive attitude will remind us that spring is but a few short months away when we will be renewed and once again inspired by the wonderful garden club friend we had in Shirley.
