Troy Garden Club Share Arbor Day Celebration With Sacred Heart Students

Each year, the Troy Garden Club celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees throughout the area. This year, they held this event at the Sacred Heart School in Troy on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 10 a.m. Students and teachers gathered outside for the ceremony.

Mari Blossom, of the Arbor Day Committee, opened the Arbor Day celebration with an introduction and dedication. The Honor Guard (Lincoln County Sheriff's Department) was also present. Younger students watched the Honor Guard with wide-eyes as they marched down the school's soccer field.

After Sister Jeannette Fennewald led the Pledge of Allegiance, Troy Mayor Charles "Pheeze" Kemper explained how many of the trees around the community had been planted by the Troy Garden Club. The trees not only beautified the city, but also provide oxygen and help clean the air.

Rev. Darrell Alley gave prayers of dedication, which reminded all those in attendance of the importance of creation and all living things.

Arbor Day Committee Member Louise Clark Peterson shared with the students a brief history of Arbor Day. "The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska," said Peterson. "It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton."

Throughout his career, he worked to improve agricultural techniques throughout the United States during his term as Secretary of Agriculture, under President Grover Cleveland.

On Nebraska's first Arbor Day, more than one million trees were planted.  In 1885, Nebraska made Arbor Day a legal holiday, choosing the date April 22 because it coincided with Morton's birthday. In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.

"Julius Morton would be proud," said Peterson in the closing of her speech.
After the speakers, the students gathered around to learn how to plant a seedling. Steve Holloway, members of the committee, chose a volunteer from the students, Michael Larson. Holloway went through the steps to properly plant a seedling with Michael demonstrating the steps.

Snow Hill Nursery planted the trees, both at Sacred Heart School and Troy Manor, taking place later that day. Each fourth-grade student in Sacred Heart, Troy, Hawk Point and Moscow Mills schools received a Flowering Dogwood seedling to plant.

"PLANTS OF MERIT"
by
MARY ANN FINK, COORDINATOR, MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Troy Garden Club had their monthly program on November 27, 2006 and invited Mary Ann Fink, Coordinator of the Plants of Merit program, from the Missouri Botanical Garden to give a presentation.  23 members were in attendance.  8 guests from the Lewis & Clark Garden Club attended and 2 guest from our "Yard of the Month" recipients.

The Plants of Merit program was formed in 1998 from an idea to research and promote underutilized and outstanding plants that are dependable growers for the lower Midwest region.  In the current brochure, 55 plants receive recognition.  Emeritus Plants of Merit include 59 varieties of annuals, perennials, shrubs & vines and trees.  Emeritus plants represent those plants that have been in the program for two or more years.  Even though they are "graduates" from the active list, Emeritis plants remain reliable choices for our area.

In the experience of the horticulture staff at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Center for Home Gardening, there are many plant selections among the annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees that are underutilized in the home landscape. Their low popularity is not because of poor performance or unusual characteristics in growth, form or function, but simply for the lack of being well known. Horticulturists recognize good plants by their ability to perform in a specific climate for a series of years. Growth characteristics, maintenance requirements, pest and disease tolerance and adaptive usefulness are a few factors that distinguish plants from one another.
Some of the plants chosen for display at the Center for Home Gardening are not well known to residential gardeners and homeowners, but should be acknowledged for their outstanding qualities and dependable performance. These plants have been singled out as Plants of Merit. We would like to encourage gardeners to consider purchasing these plants to increase the diversity of plants in the landscape and extend the pleasure of growing good plants. More information about each of the Plants of Merit can be obtained at the Center for Home Gardening.

Winfield - Elaine and Tom Fix are primarily shade gardeners with a collection of 212 varieties of hostas, 16 varieties of coral bells and numerous other shade-loving plants. A system of paths and plantings invites visitors into the woods behind their home. The garden has been on tour for the St. Louis Hosta Society.

Hawk Point - Jerry Brown maintains a wildflower garden featuring native plants. Nine acres of fields have been converted to tall grass prairie and six acres of indigenous oak and hickory woodland are under improvement. Walking trails wind throughout. Native flowering plants are replacing the structured English garden as the temperamental roses die out.

Truxton - Bill and Sharron Canelos garden atop a hill outside of Truxton. The garden is a series of theme mini-gardens, including a meditation garden featuring shade plants, a whimsical elfdom, and an operational garden railroad landscaped with miniature plants. One-fourth scale versions of New Truxton buildings from the World’s Fair era highlight the garden structures.

The size and landscape features of these gardens would present difficulty for persons of limited mobility and are not suited to strollers or wheelchairs. To help alleviate parking, it is suggested that visitors car-pool to these gardens from LCCOA in Troy, Mo. Children are welcome to share in this experience, but must remain with a parent at all times. Rain or Shine Event - Tickets are non-refundable

TROY GARDEN CLUB RECYCLES - DO YOU?
by
Elaine Fix

The Troy Garden Club, Conservation Committee, has taken on a new project by making the community aware of the need to recycle.

In the City of Troy, Christian Disposal provides recycling containers to the public for curbside recycling of glass, colored or clear, 1-8# plastic containers, newspaper, cardboard, including cereal boxes and office paper and aluminum/tin cans. As of Feb. 2005, only 30% of the residents of Troy recycle and only 15% of the residents of Moscow Mills do. This service is included in your trash pickup service for no extra charge. Give them a call to have a red recycling container provided to you for next Wednesday's pickup at 1-866-522-3781.
Another source for recycling in Lincoln County is:

Earthwise Industries
1386 S. Main St
Troy, Mo.

From January through March 20, 2005, Earthwise Industries processed 80 tons - 160,050 lbs - of newspapers and expects to recycle 200 tons by the end of the year.

The average individual produces 4 lbs of waste a day, and the average home produces 4,000 lbs of waste a year. One 3-foot stack of newspaper equals one 30-foot tree. (In 2004 about 70% of the Post Dispatch was made from recycled paper). In 1990, Missouri had 72 landfills that would accept solid waste from municipalities. By 1998, there were only 27 such landfills and in 2001 fewer than 25.

Each quarter in 2005 the club will feature an article in the Lincoln County Journal relating to a different material to be recycled.

Sources: Missouri Recycling Association, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Chesterfield Citizens Committee for the Environment, Earth Day Canada, Waste Age magazine and the Clean Air Council.
